Attorney Keisha Chase was arraigned on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving,
when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday afternoon in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Chase was released on $250,000 bail. She will make her next court appearance on March 30.
It is alleged that on November 10, last, at Duncan Street, Georgetown, Chase drove motorcar PRR 8181 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Julian Leitch, 47, of Lot ‘C’ Lama Avenue, Bel Air Park. The accident reportedly occurred around 18:30hrs.
Kaieteur News is unaware if the woman was allowed to plead to the charge, as reporters were not allowed to enter the court room by a police officer. Efforts were made by the media personnel to obtain information about the case from court officials, but they were all tight -lipped about the matter.
Kaieteur News understands that the Chief Magistrate was not aware of the move to block reporters from entering her courtroom.
After the case was heard, the attorney in an effort to evade the media walked down the court stairs shielding her face with an umbrella. She left using the court’s Brickdam entrance and was whisked away in a white motor car.
Earlier this week, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had advised that the charge be instituted against the attorney. This development came almost four months after Chase is alleged to have fatally struck Leitch. Leitch died the said day while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
It was reported that the now dead man had left his home to see the annual Diwali Motorcade.
The police in a statement had said that the driver of the car was proceeding at a normal rate of speed. It said that the female driver suddenly saw the pedestrian in the centre of the road in front of her car. Because of the closeness he was struck down. Chase is reported to have rushed the injured man to the hospital after the accident.
