A Corentyne doctor may find herself in hot water following the death of a resident of Kildonan village, Corentyne.
The patient was treated on Wednesday at the Port Mourant hospital and sent away.
Residents of Kildonan, Corentyne and relatives of Richard Dundas, called “Matrix”, 52, are furious over the way he was treated while at the Hospital and are blaming those in charge of the medical institution at the time for his death. They are accusing the doctor of neglect and want the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the conduct of the doctor.
Dundas, a labourer met his death after he was pelted on his foot with a glass bottle by another villager, Rafael Quintyn, called “Feg” outside a popular off licence liquor store and Grocery shop in the same village where Dundas usually works.
The injury reportedly severed a vein around the man’s left ankle which caused the wound to bleed profusely. According to shop owner, Ivan Dipnarine, the deceased would usually dwell by him and would assist him in his shop, his horses and any other chores.
Dipnarine stated that he left Dundas and two others sitting on a bench outside his shop and went out. Upon his return Dundas told him that the guys were interfering with him and pelted him. Dipnarine said that he cautioned the men not to interfere with the man and went inside.
He was subsequently alerted to the sound of bottles breaking. He was told by his daughter to come quick. “Matrix foot cut and he bleeding.” Upon venturing outside he saw “Matrix” in blood and bleeding profusely from the wound.
He said that Dundas told him that “Feg” pelted him with a bottle. Upon being questioned the accused told him that “Matrix” broke a bottle and walked upon it.
Dipnarine stated that he tried tying the wound with a rag but the blood kept spraying from the wound.
Dundas was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital by a passing Police patrol. While Dipnarine followed with his vehicle. He was looked at by a doctor on duty who sutured the wound and sent the man away within 15 minutes, despite the protestation of his relatives and Dipnarine.
An upset Denis Bagot, a cousin of the dead man, stated that relatives are very disappointed at the way their love one was treated at the hospital. He said that instead of admitting the seriously wounded man for observation or surgery, the doctor just causally sutured the wound and sent him home. They can’t understand such callous and don’t care damn behaviour from those in charge of a medical institution.
The injured Dundas was not himself when he left the hospital. “He was hardly conscious. We initially refused; he was weak, he could barely walk. I keep begging the doctor to keep him or transfer him to New Amsterdam but she insisted that he is alright and that we should take him home.
“The man was bleeding and crying out for pain all the time” Bagot continued.
Dipnarine said that he also pleaded with the medical personnel to admit the injured man since he lost a lot of blood and he did not seem to be well.
However he was sent away and was taken home by the same police vehicle. He had to be lifted into his yard. His cousin was cleaning him up, but within 25 minutes the man stopped moving and responding.
His cousin called Dipnarine who hurried over only to find the man not responding.
The police were called and responded promptly and hurried the man back to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the same doctor who treated him earlier.
Residents and relatives said that the hospital did not provide any medication or blood to the wounded man although it was evident that he had lost a lot of blood and arrived at the hospital in a semi-conscious state. His life could have been spared.
They’re furious that the doctor just dressed the wound and send him home.
A disturbed Dipnarine said that if he knew that was the kind of treatment his friend would have received he would have taken him to a private medical institution.
Relatives and residents are bemoaning the attitude of the doctor. They are calling for a full investigation into the matter and want the Minister of Health to intervene.
They plan to go all out to get justice.
A post mortem examination conducted on the body on Monday by Dr. Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage, blunt trauma to the head and laceration to left ankle.
Quintyn is expected to be charged shortly.
