Mike Tyson was yesterday jailed for 58 months, after he was found guilty on an armed robbery charge. The
sentencing was handed down by City Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Tyson, 25, of Lot 567 Constellation Street, Tucville, Georgetown was found guilty of robbing Anish Veersammy of one Toyota Premio motorcar valued at $3.8M, two speaker valued $200,000 and $10,000 cash among other items. The robbery occurred on July 3, 2015 at Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara.
Tyson is said to be a serial carjacker. He is currently facing several related charges before the city court. It is reported that Tyson is in the habit of hiring taxis and “sticking up” the drivers with a gun before escaping in their vehicles.
Tyson was captured by police August last year, after he hijacked a car belonging to Lawrence Singh. According to reports, he crashed into a parked vehicle in a failed bid to escape from police.
During the summing up of evidence, Magistrate Latchman told the court that she believed Tyson boarded the victim’s car although an identification parade was not held. As it relates to identification evidence, the Magistrate affirmed that based on Veersammy testimony, she is satisfied that he had ample time to view the convict’s physical features since the ordeal lasted for over 20 minutes.
She said that she believed Tyson acted in consort of another and feloniously relieved Veersammy of the items mentioned in the charge.
According to the Magistrate, Tyson had testified that he saw Veersammy for the first time at a confrontation held at the Brickdam Police Station. However, the Magistrate asserted that she did not believe his story.
In mitigation, an Attorney for Tyson asked the court to exercise leniency when passing sentence. The lawyer informed the court that her client has no previous brushes with the law. Before handing down the jail term, the court considered all mitigation factors. Magistrate Latchman pointed out that the robbery was well orchestrated and the fact that a gun was used. She also underscored the need to prohibit others from committing such offences.
Police Corporal, Shawn Gonsalves presented the prosecution’s case.
