Orville Hinds of Team Gillette Evolution continues to show his likeness for the roads of Berbice. Hinds on Sunday beat off team mate Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams to beat the field as he rode away with top honours in the Courts
sponsored Independence 50 miles cycle road race on the Corentyne highway. The event, which was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of Berbice, saw Hinds winning from 26 other cyclists. His winning time was 2 hrs, 12minutes and 11 seconds.
The race started from in front of the Courts Building at Main and St Ann Streets around 10:15 hrs with the riders being sent on their way by Regional Chairman, Region 6, David Armogan and proceeded to Nand Persuad Business Complex on the Corentyne before returning to finish at its point of origin.
As the cyclists were sent on their way there was an early battle for position as a number of riders jostled for the lead in the break away. However, not long after, Hinds and the youthful Andrew Hicks were able to stage a successful break away from the rest of the pack and maintain that lead for a considerable portion of the race.
Meanwhile, the chasing pack was beginning to close in and it was not until at No19 on the down ward journey that a four man bunch of Williams, Shaquel Agard, Christopher Griffith and Jeban Crawford were able to connect to the two leaders. However, the young Hicks suffered a slipped chain leaving the five riders to battle up front.
The five cyclists continue to carry on the battle up front with Hinds, Williams and Agard jumping the others. However, it was the resilient Hinds that had enough to hold off Williams and Agard. Griffith came in fourth with Crawford fifth and Silvio Inniss sixth.
Deoraj Garbaran rode in first among the juniors with Hicks recovering to place second.
The trio of Zamal Khan, Jason Cameron and Kerwin Collins took the three top places among the beginners. On the distaff side Christine Matheson rode home first ahead of Withney Poyer and Shanika Tiexeira. In the BMX category was Jonathan Ramsuchit winning from Shay Sue Hang, Troy David and Gilmore Daniels.
The sprint prizes were shared by Hicks with four, Hinds with three, while Inniss took one.
The beginners and female riders journeyed from in front of the Chris Jagdeo construction company to the finishing line. The BMX riders had their duel earlier, riding from the opposite direction from the Alphonso Business Complex at Stanleytown to the finishing line at Courts.
At the simple presentation ceremony, Manager of the company’s New Amsterdam Branch, Mr. Stanley McKenzie, presented the winners with their prizes. The manager reiterated that the company is always willing to give back to the community from which it garners its support. He stated that it is a well-known fact that Courts has been supporting community and sporting activities throughout Guyana.
He said that Courts was happy to be associated with the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations and there was a lot more in store.
Roberts thanked Courts for being an excellent corporate citizen and expressed the club’s gratitude. He reiterated his call for other business entity to come on board and support.
The police led by Officer In charge of Traffic, Superintendent Boodnarine Persaud were commended for doing an excellent job. (Samuel Whyte)
