Dear Editor,
City Hall is on the move, but on the move to where? The question must be asked. There seems to be an apprehension and fear amongst the administrators at City Hall that things will be very much different after the Local Government Elections and so they are preparing for those changes.
First, there has been an explosion in employment, and not amongst the blue collar workers who could actually do something about improving the conditions within the city, but rather amongst the white collar and clerical staff.
The worst part is that the bulk of these new employees are ‘friends and family’ of the present Councillors and senior staff. This is wrong and should be reversed by the new Council.
They should demand to see the listing of persons employed over the last year, and will discover that they are all the kith and kin of the present administrators. When these discoveries are made what will be done to the types such as the Town Clerk and the Personnel Officer?
Second, there is blatant squandermania which will result in the Georgetown Municipality being completely broke by the time the new Councillors are sworn in. This is criminal and has been facilitated by the Ministry of Communities as the current Council should have been dissolved as soon as the elections were announced, but was not done.
With this being the last days for most of the Councillors to get what they can before getting out, they are making good on what opportunities are available.
There was the questionable waiver of hundreds of millions of dollars in outstanding interest to big business interests; there was the sharing out of cleaning contracts to relatives and friends of Councillors and senior officers; the undertaking of worthless projects such as the placement of old railway tracks on the pavements around the city; and the assigning of cheap and inferior luminous green plastic bins around the downtown area that have all but disappeared through theft and damage.
One can only guess what the next move the senior officers of the Council will be on, but I can guess that their plans include escaping judgment by taking off on study programs to London, to the US and beyond. Riding off into the sunset with their saddlebags filled with their loot!
