16-year old killed in Moruca boat crash
An investigation has been launched into a boat accident at Acquero, Moruca, North West
A rescuer tries to resuscitate Romascindo after pulling her from the river.
District which resulted in the death of 16-year-old Alisha Romascindo.
Reports are sketchy but this newspaper understands that the teenager who attended the Santa Rosa Secondary School was in a small boat with four persons heading to Kumaka when it collided with a large passenger boat around 14:00 hours yesterday.
According to a source in the area, the passenger boat which is fitted with a 200-horsepower outboard engine was heading to charity in low water.
In an effort to navigate the boat into the side of the river where the water is higher, the captain steered it into the path of the oncoming small boat.
Three of the occupants of the small boat were hurled into the water and made it to the shore of the river, while Romascindo could not be immediately found.
A short while later an alarm was raised that someone was under the overturned small boat that the teenager was finally found.
At the time she was still alive but despite the efforts of medical personnel at the location, who rushed her to the Charity Hospital, the teenager was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police were informed and the captain of the passenger boat was detained for questioning.
