The Guyana-Jamaica Friendship Association visited the Mashabo Primary School on the
Essequibo Coast and presented the students and staff with much needed books and school supplies.
The New York based non-profit organization which has adopted the Mashabo Primary School, which is approximately 25 miles from Suddie, was making its annual visit to the school.
Vice-President of the GJFA, Ms. Claudette Powell, R.N presented headmaster Mr. Quado VanCooten with a microscope and opined that this was intended to encourage students to take up science.
GJFA member Ms. June De Weever presented the teachers with gifts while Ms Leonie Hernandez and Ms Marcia Waithe both Registered Nurses in Florida presented the students with a large collection of books, bringing the number of books given to the school over the last three months to well over five hundred. Included in the books were eight copies of “Navigators Travel to Guyana” which was authored by Ms. Jacqueline Smartt, an Alumna of Bishops’ High School, who is based in New York City.
President of the GJFA, Dr. Frank Denbow reiterated his organization’s commitment to the Mashabo Primary School and praised the Management of Fly Jamaica Airways without whose strong support the GJFA’s visit would not have been possible.
Headmaster Mr. Quado VanCooten and the students expressed their profound gratitude to the GJFA for their contributions to the school.
In a brief visit to the Mashabo Health Centre a donation was made by the GJFA to purchase an inverter for the occasions when there are power outages.
