The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) was the recipient of an equipment
grant from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) as a part of ITTF’s global programme to assist with the development of the sport in Guyana.
The grant includes: Six Stag 1000 DX Competition Tables; Six Clip on Table Tennis Nets; Six Score Cards; 80 STAG Elite Beginners Racquets; 4.5 Gross of STAG One Star Plastic Training Balls and Two Gross of STAG and Three Star Plastic Competition Balls.
“The grant will significantly impact the development efforts of the GTTA, allowing us to expand our programmes,” the association said in a release yesterday, adding that it will positively impact their national teams training programmes.
“We will be able to have multi-ball training for our national team members with the new plastic balls being used; in addition to accommodating more players,” the release continued. This fits in with our strategic plan, which is to have coordinated national team training programmes for all levels of players throughout the year.
The association believes that the grant also improves their capacity to host more domestic and international competitions. “The grant positively impacts the decentralisation efforts of the association given our plan is to host and take national competitions and training camps to the rural areas,” the document noted.
According to the GTTA, there is a long-term plan to provide competition tables to Regions such as Berbice, Linden and Bartica with a vision of gradually building capacity in the regions so as to allow the Steering Committees in these areas to become efficient.
“It is our aim to lobby ITTF for the support in that regard through the Development of a National Sport Structure Grant through XIOM, which is an equipment manufacturer,” the GTTA informed in the release.
The association said that the tables came at an opportune time. The grant equipment will be used to conduct a table tennis for schools programme for 30 secondary schools in Georgetown, which is a collaborative effort between the GTTA, Ministry of Education Department of Sports and the National Sports Commission.
“The central aim of the programme was to orient students and teach them the fundamentals of the sport of table tennis. The long-term benefit of this is participation at the junior championships slated for March 4-7 at the National Gymnasium,” the release continued.
GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe stated that the Executive Committee appreciates the efforts of ITTF Latin American Development Officer, Mr. Ramon Ortega Montes for lobbying for Guyana to benefit from the grant based on the GTTA advocacy.
“His assessment of our potential when he visited Guyana in 2015 to conduct an ITTF level one and level two coach’s certification courses, assisted in helping us secure this grant,” Munroe said in the document.
He thanked Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry for facilitating the tax waivers and the staff of the Guyana Revenue Authority and Mr. Gavin Lowe for expediting and assisting with the clearance of the table tennis equipment.
