Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, yesterday confirmed that the file in relation to the matter where three soldiers were accused of raping a teen at Lethem, Region Nine, has been returned to the Guyana Police Force for further investigations to be conducted.
Blanhum said that the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) returned the file to the police yesterday and recommended that further investigations be done.
Kaieteur News understands that once this is done, the file will be sent back to the DPP so that legal advice on the matter can be sought.
As of now, the three Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks are on bail as they await the advice from the DPP.
Last Friday, the 16-year-old and her relatives turned up at the Lethem Police Station and made a report that she had been raped by three soldiers. Upon receiving this report, the men were immediately arrested.
Statements were taken from the three GDF ranks and the alleged victim after which the file was sent to the Crime Chief and then forwarded to the DPP.
This newspaper was informed that the 16-year-old was under the influence of alcohol when she claimed that she was sexually assaulted.
In the statement, the teen claimed that the three soldiers picked her up from a popular drinking spot at Lethem and took her at the back of the Army Camp where one of the ranks choked her.
She then claimed that she was “blacked out” and when she regained consciousness, her pants and underwear were removed and the men had vanished from the location. She later identified the rank, who choked her along with his two colleagues who took her to the desolate area.
GDF Public Relations Officer, Major George, when contacted would only say that he is aware that an allegation of rape has been made by a female against three soldiers and the matter is currently being investigated.
Investigations are ongoing.
