Police ranks in ‘Operation Dragnet’ are preparing charges for a Norton Street, Lodge, man who was held at a roadblock yesterday with a quantity of marijuana and cocaine in his car.
The 34-year-old man who gave his name as Ryan Hoppie, of Norton Street, Lodge, claimed ownership of the drugs and allegedly offered the police money to let him go.
This newspaper understands that at around 11:00 hours, Inspector Christopher Humphrey and his team were on roadblock duties on the Liliendaal Railway Embankment when they stopped a BMW that Hoppie was driving.
At the time of the stop, Hoppie’s nephew was a passenger.
Police decided to search the car after they observed the occupants acting in a suspicious manner.
A check of a haversack in the back seat of the car unearthed 81 grams of marijuana and 113 grams of cocaine with a total value of $200,000.
The driver immediately told police that the items belonged to him and tried to strike a deal with them to let him go.
He was promptly arrested and taken into custody, while the BMW was impounded.
This is the second drug bust that ranks on roadblock duties on the East Coast of Demerara have made since the launch of Operation Dragnet.
Last December Inspector Humphrey and another group of ranks stopped a car at Vigilance and found marijuana with a street value of $20M.
