In an effort to increase Oral Health awareness among children, five primary schools in Region Three participated in a quiz last Tuesday.
The schools that participated were Zeelugt, Tuschen, Philadelphia, Parika
and Greenwich Park Primary Schools.
Three Primary Four students represented each school.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Neromini Fagu from Omni Dental, in collaboration with Colgate-Palmolive Guyana Limited and the Ministry of Public Health.
The dentist revealed that people do not give as much attention to their oral health as they should.
“I am hoping that once people realize the importance of good oral health they will seek more preventative treatment,” Dr. Fagu stressed.
She further explained that it is important for children to practice good oral hygiene at an early age and activities such as the quiz, impact oral education in a fun way.
Prizes were awarded to both schools and students.
In the student category, Stephanie Singh placed first, Shiraz Singh was second and Jamaicia Johnson, third.
In the school category, Tuschen placed first, Zeelugt was runner-up, and Philadelphia placed third.
The schools are hoping that similar Oral Health activities would be conducted in the future.
Meanwhile, Dr. Fagu urged persons to visit their Dentists regularly for check-ups as they may not be able to detect problems on their own.
In addition to regular check-ups, she said, they may also need to get regular professional dental cleanings.
“Most people tend to skip getting a cleaning, thinking their teeth are okay. Remember you will not be able to see all parts of your teeth, especially the ones in the back of the mouth,” the Dentist stressed.
She continued, “It is difficult to examine the back surfaces of your front teeth. Sometimes the tartar buildup and stains can be quite heavy in these areas, even though the front surfaces of the teeth may appear okay.
“Many people tend to forego getting a cleaning and will only visit their Dentist if they are experiencing pain or think something is wrong. This is not prevention. The time and money invested in prevention will benefit you in the long run.”
