In an effort to tackle cervical cancer in sexually active women of child-bearing age, women are being urged to visit the VIA (Visual Inspection with Acid) clinic in their region and get screened as soon as possible.
Ministry of Public Health’s Medex, Lorlene Ramsundar, made this disclosure at a symposium held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre on Sunday by the Guyana-Jamaica Friendship Association (GJFA) in collaboration with the Ministry.
The focused of the seminar was on women’s health. Medical personnel who attended the event spoke on breast and cervical cancers, maternal mortality among other illnesses which affects women in Jamaica and Guyana.
The conference was opened by Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings.
She pledged government’s commitment to continue education of health care workers and to work with all stakeholders in an effort to improve the health care delivery systems in the country.
President of the GJFA, a New York-based organization, Dr. Frank Denbow, called for mutual respect and cooperation between Guyanese in the Diaspora and those working here to work together to improve the conditions in Guyana.
The symposium featured Professor Horace Fletcher, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
Professor Fletcher called for Comprehensive and Confidential studies on the cases of Maternal Mortality in both Jamaica and Guyana, since both countries have high prevalence of this problem. Guyana recorded 17 maternal deaths in 2015.
