– face favourites Shattaville Gunners in tomorrow’s final
Played before a capacity crowd that included Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste among other officials from sponsor Banks DIH, the semi-finals of the West Side Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition produced some pulsating action on Saturday night, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, West Demerara.
The most exciting game of the night was between Showstoppers and Brothers United which had to go to extra time to determine a winner after regulation time ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
After both teams entertained the capacity crowd to an exhilarating exhibition of futsal skills in a fast paced game, an own goal accounted for the first goal of the game to give Showstoppers the lead in the 29th minute of play.
However, the usually prolific Adami Hoyte responded rapidly for Brothers United to level the proceedings and keep them in contention for a final berth.
With time running out, both teams came close to taking the ascendancy, but when the whistle sounded to signal the end of normal time the scores remained level to send the contest into extra time.
Once again, the teams treated the appreciative fans to another fine display of skills in the shorter format of the game and it took a wonderful effort from Marvin Josiah to break the deadlock and give Showstoppers the lead which they held until the final whistle sounded to book their place in the final set for tomorrow, at the same venue.
Earlier, Shattaville Gunners underlined their booking as favourites to win the title with an imposing performance against Harmony Ballers to establish their place in the final.
On target for the winners were Jeuel Stephens, who netted in the 7th minute to give his team a slim 1-0 lead at the break, while Marvin Henry eased the anxiety when he fired in after twenty-five minutes to cement the win.
