A short-drop taxi driver was on Friday robbed of his car and cash by armed bandits posing as passengers.
Around 12:35, taxi driver, Riaz Baichan, 19, of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was soliciting passengers at the Diamond Car Park when he picked up three passengers, two men and a woman.
The female passenger exited at the third bridge along the Diamond Housing Scheme Public Road, while the two males, said to be of East Indian descent, stated that they were heading to Last Street.
This information was relayed to Kaieteur News by sister of the teen, Kavita Baichan, who further related that after making the turn into Last Street and realizing that they were in a desolate area, the men stated that they were getting off there.
The first man then exited the car and pretended to reach for his taxi fare but instead he pulled out a gun and held Riaz at gun point demanding cash. The second man, who was seated at the back of the cab, came out, dragged the driver out of the car then escaped in the vehicle with $1,500 in cash.
Riaz later stated that he is still traumatized at the whole ordeal. He said that several checks are being made by the police for the yellow Toyota Fielder wagon bearing number plate PTT 5798.
