Firefighters are still trying to determine the origin of a fire which completely destroyed a two-storey building at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) around 22:30 hrs on Thursday night.
The upper flat of the building was living quarters while the lower flat was used as a bond to store tyres, wardrobes, fridges, fans, generators and stoves among other electrical items.
This newspaper was told that the property was owned by two brothers who reside in Canada. At the time of the fire no one was occupying the upper flat of the building but workers would occasionally visit the bond to sell stocks and to store more items.
The property had no security guards. No one could exactly say what caused the fire. A source from the fire department said that they are still trying to determine the origin of the fire.
There are reports that when the brothers were informed of the fire, one of them collapsed and had to be hospitalized since they would have lost millions in the blaze.
Kaieteur News was told that three fire tenders responded to the fire but when the water in their tanks was finished, they had to look at the building as it burnt to the ground since there was no other source for water.
Neighbours had to form a bucket brigade to wet the walls of a house located in the western side of the bond but eventually ran out of water when the blaze from the fire next door melted the barrel.
Neighbours said that they started smelling smoke and within minutes the building went up in flames. They reported hearing explosions after the building went up in flames.
Investigations are still ongoing.
