A man was found dead on the mudflat at the fisherman’s wharf in Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, some
time around 7:00hrs yesterday.
Residents have identified the body as that of a fellow villager, 51-year-old, SurajLall of 102 Post Office Street.
According to residents, SurajLall’s body was found next to a hut he usually occupies at the wharf to “look over” the fishing boats and the supply camps in the area.
The man’s son, Sukhdeo SurajLall, said that he last saw his father some time Thursday before leaving to visit one of the creeks on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
He continued that his father was also a “sickly” individual who had recently visited a nearby hospital where he was administered medication to treat suspected tuberculosis.
The relatives have dismissed all suggestions of foul play since they are convinced that the man’s medical condition was the source of his demise.
Contributing to their claim, residents and relatives said that after the body was pulled from the mud, SurajLall’s face was filled with “cold”.
“How them find he, he hand was on he chest, like the pain had he bad and he just roll off fall in de mud,” the man’s teary-eyed son said.
A resident, who occupies a hut adjacent to SurajLall’s , said that he was awakened in the middle of the night by the man’s consistent groaning.
“I hear he going “ow, God, ow God” so like the thing de done tek he and had he bad already. He come outside (on the veranda) and lie down on the bed (mattress) but I didn’t tek it for nothing because he does always go on so. He does be coughing hard, hard, because he sick right,” the resident said.
When this publication visited the area where SurajLall’s body was found, the impression of his body in the mud was still visible. His medication was a few feet away.
A post mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted soon.
