Mainstay residents capture roving jaguar
Residents living between Mainstay/Wayhaka and Red Lock Village are most relieved after
they caught one of the jaguars that were creating havoc in those communities for the longest while. The jaguar was captured alive around 6:00 hours at a place called “Jump, Jump” after Chris Allen, a resident set a trap to lure the dangerous animal in.
According to reports, a dog was placed in the trap since dogs are the jaguars most preferred prey. As the jaguar lured himself into the trap to attack the dog, the trap door closed, securing the jaguar.
Scores of residents woke up to the exciting news of the capture of the jaguar and took the opportunity to get a glimpse of the animal.
Members of the Environmental Protection Agency were alerted and on Friday, they were expected to visit the community where the jaguar was captured.
Residents said they are not sure what would become of the jaguar but someone promised them a monetary reward once the Jaguar was captured alive. The Jaguars have devoured numerous dogs and goats within Red Lock. On Sunday it had eaten another dog, at Red Lock. Residents however believe that the captured jaguar is younger compared to the others that are still roaming the community.
