Three Immigration Officers and a security guard were yesterday remanded to prison over the discovery of two pounds of cocaine on a Dynamic Airways flight which left Guyana and landed at JFK airport, earlier this month.
Oral David, 29, a University of Guyana student of Lot 401 Non Pareil Park, East Coast Demerara; Orin Harris, 24, of Lot TN 74 Timehri; Raduskie Wright, 24, of Lot 271 No. 77 New Housing Scheme, Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice and security guard Diane Jackson, 29, of Lot 1717 Soesdyke, all pleaded not guilty to a charge of conspiracy to traffic narcotics.
It is alleged that on February 2, last, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, they conspired with each other and other persons to traffic narcotics.
The defendants were ordered to return to court on March 10, when the matter will be called for reports.
Attorney Clyde Forde represented Harris. He told the court that his client is a single father of one. The lawyer noted that Harris has been an Immigration Officer for the past six years.
Wright was represented by Attorney Glenn Hanoman, who told the court that the defendants had been in custody since February 2.The lawyer further highlighted that the illicit drug was not found in Guyana.
Jackson, a mother of two minor children, was represented by Attorney-at-Law Mr. Melvyn Duke. The Attorney claimed that the woman was used as a scape goat. He explained that Jackson’s duty is to check persons before they board the plane.
The facts of the matter were not disclosed by Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones. However, Jones objected to bail citing the gravity of the charge and penalty attached to the offence. The Prosecutor revealed that he is in possession of three caution statements from the defendants.
Jones also said that oral confessions were made by the defendants. According to Jones the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Guyana, will be assisting with the prosecution’s case.
After taking into consideration submissions from both defence and prosecution, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered the defendants remanded on the ground that no special reasons were given to the court.
According to reports, a package of cocaine was unearthed in the baggage hold of the Dynamic Airways flight after it landed at JFK on February 2. Reports are that the cocaine was placed into the baggage hold by a local handler and was unearthed by handling staff while clearing luggage from the aircraft upon its arrival in the USA.
In light of the discovery, Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) launched investigations which led to the arrest of the three Immigration Officers and security guard. Police have issued a wanted bulletin for Roraima Airways Baggage handler, Kennard Stephen De Jonge of Lot 55 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara in relation to the drug bust.
