Dear Editor,
Attacking the Georgetown City Council seems to be the highlight of LGE campaigning in the city. It’s as if City Hall is the LGE campaign scapegoat and everyone is taking a swipe at this ‘wounded dog’. More than two decades without LGE and it is now the scramble for Georgetown. I am one of those voting for the first time at these local polls and I am still to be convinced by those claiming they can do better.
As far as I am concerned, all I can see is a race to control the Capital City. I see a race to power and for others, a stepping stone to bigger dreams. I say this because in one letter sent to this publication a contending group, Team Benschop accused the Council of corruption but when he was asked to provide clarity on his financial handling of his Foundation, a defense was put up by the Group’s Campaign Manager, and nothing else.
Another group, Team Legacy is fearful that it is too small to go up against the larger groups; PPP and APNU+AFC. They said in a letter also written to this newspaper that “small can get big”, taking offence to one of the larger parties dismissing the smaller ones, saying that they were popping up like “Jumble” umbrellas. Legacy believes that the larger parties, particularly the governing party should not run for local polls. For me, this thought can be very much twisted because I would have voted for a party at general polls because I believe they are able to run the country, why should I be deprived of having that party run my community also, I mean I did trust them with the country.
Whose fault is it that the smaller parties are unable to garner the necessary support? Wouldn’t your activism in your local area give you that due recognition anyway? I would not like to be denied my right to vote for the party of my choice because another believes it is too small to compete. I often wonder if the intent of some of these groups are genuine or they too want a piece of the pie or they just see the local leg as a stepping stone to the ‘big leagues’.
In the meantime City Hall and its current administration will be thrown to the wolves. I repeat, I am not convinced by these newcomers, but when I look at my home Georgetown I do believe that change has come
