Dear Editor,
Recently, I was driving along Sheriff Street proceeding north, while approaching the intersection at Garnett street I observed the green light on at the junction+n, I glanced to the right then left of Garnett street which was clear. My eyes quickly flashed at the traffic light again but there was no light on, I wondered wasn’t this light green and working, during the split second thought process the red light came on so I hit the brakes not wanting to cross on red thus causing my vehicle to cause obstruction in the path of a minibus proceeding in the opposite direction that was turning right into Garnett street.
The driver of the minibus drove up to my vehicle and started honking his horn clearing drawing attention to everyone around whiles preventing me from correcting the already seemingly bad maneuver on my part. Besides the bus were two traffic policemen on a motorcycle, they saw what transpired and made no hesitation in coming across to me and in the exercising of their duties they asked me to go into the corner.
I was politely asked if I know the reason for being pulled over, I answered in the affirmative and was asked to produce my driver’s license. I told the police something happened at the traffic light but even I was unable to explain at the time so I said I was deeply sorry for causing the obstruction and if I could be given a chance. The lance corporal riding the motorcycle told me it wasn’t a ticket offence and invited me to Kitty Police Station. I drove in front the police rode behind.
The constable that was the second rank on the motorcycle escorted me into the station, once inside there was a female officer at the deck, besides her was a male whom I assumed was another officer because of the pants and shoes he wore with a civilian top and a female sergeant. The constable informed the ranks of the incident saying that my action nearly caused an accident etc. The station was quiet so everyone heard the constable clearly. Then the officer asked me what was my version, I replied by saying “ALL THAT THIS POLICE SAID IS THE TRUTH” I believe it was my tone, honesty and remorse that caught their ears and eyes. I went on to say that something went wrong for a moment with the traffic light and not wanting to cross while the light was red, I stopped causing the obstruction for a short moment and I was deeply sorry.
It was the truth, they believed me. All this time the constable was making/writing his entry. I asked for leniency and the sergeant said in clear words; “you are one out of five thousand to come into the police station and say the police is telling the truth”. I quietly asked the constable for a chance. He said if it was up to him he would have given me but I have to ask the inspector or the lance corporal on the motor cycle that brought me in. The constable then asked for the charge book and upon hearing that, I heard a voice said “you’ll gone still charge this man” another lance corporal came out of a room, along with the sergeant and the assumed officer at the desk and they all made a successful plea for my release.
I signed in the ledger besides “warning and sent away” and left the Kitty police station relieved and happy thinking differently about police in general. No bribes nor favor were asked of me.
Strangely that evening I was passing the very traffic light in the same direction and around the same time the light changed from green and I observed that the amber light was not working, that is what caused the delay in my action earlier that day resulting in the obstruction.
I hereby publically thank the police at the Kitty police station especially those related to my incident for listening keenly, not seeking to just drag me before the court, pleading on my behalf and at the same time I wish to bring to the attention of the relevant authority the malfunctioning amber light at that intersection.
