A 20-year-old man who received a Presidential pardon last year, was yesterday jailed for 18 months,
after he pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping from lawful custody when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Joshua Joseph, 20, admitted that on February 13, while in custody at the Brickdam Police Station pending investigation into a robbery, he escaped. He was sentenced to jail even though he tried to justify his actions before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, told the court that on the day in question, Joseph was being escorted to court by a Police Constable when he escaped. He said that Joseph began to behave disorderly and assaulted the cop. According to the Prosecutor, the man managed to remove his handcuffs. The Prosecutor explained that the officer was unable to pursue Joseph because he was guarding other prisoners at the time.
The court was told that on February 15, the police acting on information went to the Stabroek Market area where they apprehended the escapee.
However, Joseph claimed that he was assaulted by the officer after he refused to wear old clothing to attend a court hearing. He claimed that he and the officer got into a scuffle and his handcuffs opened and he ran away.
As if this charge was not enough, Joseph was slapped with two other charges – one for the offence of armed robbery and another on a charge of break and enter and larceny.
He and Kester McPhoy are accused of using a knife to rob Felicia Walton of a gold chain valued at $60,000
on February 3 at Stabroek, Georgetown.
It was further alleged that on January 19, at High Street, Joseph broke into the home of Osa Omarao and stole one Sharp television, a laptop, a gold chain and a pair of gold earrings – all valuing $123,000.
They had no legal representation and both denied the allegations.
They were remanded to prison after the Magistrate upheld bail objections by Prosecutor Jones. Jones highlighted the nature and gravity of the charge and also the penalty attached to the offences. These matters will be called again on March 1.
