Dear Editor,
On May 16th 2015, Guyana inhaled several breaths of fresh air with the dawning of a new era. To date, we are witnessing the unfolding of the progressive and nationalistic vision of His Excellency, President David Granger. One project that is reflective of our President’s visionary approach to leadership is the enhancement of the Durban Park landscape. Many can remember that in the not too distant past, our children often question whether Tarzan resided at Durban Part. Nevertheless, many citizens are extremely grateful for effort being made to host various activities at this venue during the year of our jubilee.
However, a photo that accompanied an article on the front page of the Guyana Chronicle captioned, “Race on to ‘Prep’ Durban Park For Feb 23″, painted a very troubling picture. The photo captured workmen manually lifting what appears to be a 10’’x10’’ greenheart plank, up the steps of the temporary seating accommodation for the Republic Flag Raising ceremony. This photo is troubling because it appears that the safety of workers and visitors to the site is being ignored. Not only were the men not attired with the requisite safety gears, but one of the said workers was barefooted. It is frightening to imagine what would be the result if an accident was to occur. Some visitors who appeared to be integrally involved with the execution of the project were also observed without safety gears.
While our President provides the vision for our country, we as citizens, especially those who are tasked with the management and general overview of national projects, must ensure safety of workers is made a priority, since we are moving to a more progressive and professional country post May 2015. If we are to look for a model as it pertains to enforcement of safety laws and practices, we can revisit the work done by the Ministry of Social Protection early in its existence.
All Guyana looks forward to a memorable year of our Jubilee, as the plans for the Durban Park continue to unfold.
