Traffic ranks are awaiting a statement from the father of a four-year-old child, who died two
days after she was involved in an accident on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown on January 11, last.
The child, Paula Waterman, was the pillion rider on her father, Paul’s motorcycle when the bike allegedly suffered a ‘blowout.’ This caused the older Waterman to lose control of his motorcycle and slam into a utility pole.
The Lodge Nursery School student was flung about 10 feet away from the point of impact, while her father collapsed nearby.
They were taken to the hospital where little Waterman died in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and her father remains a patient at the hospital.
The father and his daughter were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the older Waterman was speeding when the accident occurred. Residents in the area said that Paul, a coconut vendor, would usually speed on the roadways.
The senior police source said that ranks are still investigating the accident. He said that at this point traffic ranks are awaiting a statement from the father, who is hospitalized at the GPHC.
“If the investigation shows that the father was responsible for the accident, then he will be charged for causing the death of the child by dangerous driving,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Traffic Chief Dion Moore continuously urged motorcyclists not to ride unless they have proper helmets.
In the event of an accident, he said, the helmet will offer some protection. “Do not ride unless you have proper safety helmets. They (helmets) will protect you in the event of an accident.”
With respect to towing, the Traffic Chief said that motorcyclists should only carry one person. “A lot of parents are towing very small children. They should desist from this practice; it is not safe for you, the children and the general public.”
Investigations are ongoing.
