To clash with New Amsterdam/East Canje/East Bank
Lower Corentyne continued their poor showing this year as they lost to West Berbice in The JZ Mohamed
of City Bias, New York, USA inter zone under-15 cricket tournament organised by the Berbice Cricket Board.
In the final preliminary match of the round robin segment played at Albion Sports Complex last Saturday, they lost by eight wickets to the visitors. Batting first after winning the toss, the Lower Corentyne team were shot out for a meager 71 with only M. Gopilall with 15 reaching double figures. Berbice under-15 player Seon Glasgow (Jnr) was impressive with bowling figures of 4 for 15. Another Berbice under-15 player Nigel Deodat supported with 3 for 12. In reply, West Berbice stuttered a bit to be 15 for 2 before Glasgow(Jnr) and Fawaz Gafoor commandingly took their team to victory at 72 for 2 with both batsmen unbeaten on 33 (6×4) and 22 respectively.
West Berbice will now play New Amsterdam/Canje/East Bank in the final which is expected to be a closely fought contest. The match is fixed for Saturday February 20 at the famous Albion Sports Complex.
The West Berbice team will be spearheaded by all-rounders Seon Glasgow (Jnr), Nigel Deodat and Marvan Prasad with support from batsman Fawaz Gafoor. Their opposition also has a very rounded team with skipper Jevan Schultz, Leon Swamy and Aaron Beharry, all being all-rounders. Opener Jerron France and wicketkeeper/batsman Carl Gilgeous will add depth to the batting, while Nikeem Noble will prove to be a key bowler. New Amsterdam/Canje/East Bank got the better of West Berbice by a slim margin in their preliminary clash.
Meanwhile, the junior selectors of the BCB have announced a strong team for the upcoming under-15 Inter
County tournament. The team will be captained by Jevan Schultz and will have Seon Glasgow (Jnr) as his vice. Players are listed below: Jevan Schultz, Seon Glasgow (Jnr), Jerron France, Hemchand Sukhai, Fawaz Gafoor, Carl Gilgeous, Marvan Prasad, Aaron Beharry, Chanderpaul Govindan, Nigel Deodat, Nikeem Noble, Antonio Kempadoo, Nicklus Haywood and Leon Swamy.
Standbys: Ricardo Ramdial, Tejram Diabram, Sarwan Chaitnarine, Reyad Karim, Brandon Pydanna, Abdul Ramsammy, Gaurav Ramesh and Romel Retimah. The coach and manager are the same as last year: former West Indies youth player Andre Percival and Kwesi Maltay a former national youth player. Berbice is the defending champion.
The Berbice Cricket Board would like to thank Shabeer Baksh of Blairmont Cricket Club for hosting the game at the D’Edward ground. Special thanks to Upper Corentyne Cricket Association and Young Warriors Cricket Club for hosting a match each. This did go a far way in making sure that the tournament is successful. Gratitude is in order for the major sponsor Jameel Mohamed of City Bias, New York, USA.
