Vivian Albert and Kavita Yadram were named male and female cricketers of the year when the Enterprise Busta Sports Club held its annual awards ceremony at Saturday night, East Coast Demerara.
Albert had an outstanding year (2015) scoring 669 runs and taking 26 wickets at the senior level and 176 runs with seven wickets at the U19 stage. Rohan Mangal who scored 749 runs copped the best batsman of the year title, while Zaheer Mohamed Shadir with 29 wickets received the best bowler accolade. Hansraj Sookdeo (316 runs) and Devanand Persaud (14 wickets) were the best batsman and bowler respectively in the B team, while Bhaskar Yadram with 846 runs and 13 wickets took the U19 all-rounder of the year prize. Special prizes were given to Pradesh Balkissoon, Ricardo Niranjan, West Indies opener Rajendra Chandrika and former managing director of Guyana Beverage Company Inc Robert Selman.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of former West Indies fastbowler and territorial development officer Colin Stuart and Gervy Harry of the Department of Sport, Ministry of Education.
In addressing the gathering, Harry congratulated the awardees and urged them to stay committed. He lauded Enterprise Busta SC for the contribution to cricket and spoke about fairplay, doping, violence and education. He said that for West Indies cricket to return to the glory days we must produce quality players on a regular basis. “No stone should be left unturned to produce world class players-players who can perform on the international stage, players who are capable of competing with and dominating the best players in the world consistently, we all have a role to play on this journey,” he posited.
“Awardees you have worked hard for success, however you must keep striving for repeated and consistent success and the achievement of one goal should be the starting point of another.”
Harry stated that the National Sports Commission is keen in promoting sports and its organizations, maintaining facilities and encourage co-operation with sports entities.
