The Ministry of Natural Resources is in the process of establishing a Compliance Division. That division will be tasked with ensuring that all the agencies and sectors falling under the Ministry of Natural Resources are compliant with the relevant regulations and policies.
This was announced last week as Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources Simona Broomes took the floor of the National Assembly to make her contributions to the Budget debates.
She said that the process of effective management will start with the setting up of the Division.
Broomes said that effective management cannot be built on a “free-for-all foundation, where people simply do as they like, ignore the rules and regulations entirely and simply proceed as though everything is normal.”
Broomes said that that is exactly what was happening in the Natural Resources sector before the change of government. “The position of this administration is that all of this has to change.”
The Minister told the National Assembly that the Compliance Division will be staffed by skilled personnel. She said that the employees will be directly responsible for ensuring that the operatives in the mining sector are in compliance with the law. “That, Mr. Speaker, is a promise.”
Also, Broomes said, “during my own brief tenure in the Ministry of Natural Resources I have already seen clear indications of a determination to seek to repair a system which, in some respects, has been eroded by corruption and indifference. Our task is to create a vibrant natural resources sector, one which the people of this country can look to in the period ahead. We, Mr. Speaker, are about legacy.”
“The task ahead of this administration does not allow for political confrontations over the past. The APNU-AFC administration is looking ahead…….so that those who anticipate long, sterile and pointless discourses will be disappointed. We shall, of course, be accommodating of constructive discourse and it is my personal wish that such discourse starts right here in this House during the course of this debate.”
