On another truncated day 121 minutes were lost due to rain in the sixth round PCL four-day First-Class encounter between Guyana Jagaurs and Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at the Providence Stadium yesterday, Vishaul
Narsingh Deonarine plays defensively to his Albion team mate Veerasammy Permaul at Providence yesterday.
Singh’s unbeaten 104 was the highlight of the depressing day for handful of fans present.
When bad light stopped play at 17:14 hrs, the Red Force were 136-3 in reply to the Jaguars’ 237, spearheaded by Singh’s innings which lasted 329 minutes, 218 balls with 14 fours.
Reyad Emrit (3-44), Marlon Richards (3-41) and debutant off-spinner Jon Russ Jagessar (3-59) were the wicket-takers for the Red Force who were led by an elegant 49-run third wicket stand between Narsingh Deonarine and Yannick Cariah, who reached a fighting unbeaten 58 from 125 balls, 172 minutes decorated with five fours and a six by the close.
The Jaguars resumed on 204-7 and Devendra Bishoo (11) was taken at gully off Jagessar at 215-8 while Gudakesh Motie (2) was also removed by the impressive Jagessar at 22-3. Singh on 97 was in danger of being left stranded in the 90s.
Singh late cut Deonarine for his 14th boundary to reach his fourth century and third for this season. His 100 came from 205 balls and 327 minutes as he became the only batsman with 500 run this season.
Rain stopped play after 88.3 overs with the score 229-9 and Singh on 101 and Keon Joseph yet to score. After a delay of 41 minutes play restarted at 11:18hrs.
Joseph hammered Khan to the mid-wicket boundary while Singh swiveled and pulled Khan in the same overs. The new ball was taken after 90 overs and it was given to Richards.
Singh was dropped at gully off Richards on 104 in an otherwise unblemished innings. But Emrit wrapped up the innings when he had Joseph (6) caught at third slip leaving Singh unbeaten.
The Red Force reached 19-1 by lunch in overcast conditions, Kyle Hope (9) edged left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul to Leon Johnson at slip in his first over after Reifer and Joseph had sent down four overs with the new ball.
After the interval, Lewis smashed Permaul for two delightful boundaries in the over but rain at 13:15hrs delayed the restart by an hour and 15 minutes.
When play resumed Lewis began in pugnacious fashion and hit three fours and six but he threw his wicket away, a reckless off-drive to Bishoo at mid-off trying to ‘take on’ Joseph with the total on 49 and his score on 26.
Deonarine got off the mark when he deliberately went over the top to fellow Albion spinner Permaul and dumped him for a one-bounce four over the head of mid-off.
Yannick Cariah was looking good and played some nice shots as Joseph bowled with good pace on the easy paced track but was also inconsistent with his line.
At Tea the Red Force had reached 62-2 with Cariah on 22 and Deonarine on 4 and after the break Deonarine continued to bat fluently and executed back-to-back boundaries off Permaul.
The left-handed third wicket pair of Deonarine and Cariah grew in confidence as their innings progressed and both batsman played some handsome shots on the heavy outfield before Deonarine, who seemed to get an inside edge, was given LBW by Umpire Nandkumar Shivsankar.
Deonarine’s demise came at 98-3 and his 18 came from 51 balls, 56 minutes and included three fours.
Skipper Jason Mohamed joined the well set Cariah who batted with a mixture of tight defence and sensible attack as Bishoo in particular found a nice grove and back to the ‘old’ Bishoo.
Motie was soon introduced and the leading wicket-taker this with 34 scalps, continued to impress with his guile.
Cariah reached his fifty with a pugnacious pull for four off Motie and celebrated with a stunning cover driven boundary off the next ball. His seventh First-Class half-century came from 116 balls, 164 minutes with four fours and a six.
Mohamed supported well with an unbeaten 18 going into today’s penultimate day which is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
