Dear Editor,
A recent article in one of the dailies again raised my anger. An elderly lady was struck down while on a pedestrian crossing! A speeding truck was involved. Another news item told of a speeding minibus turning turtle and killing a young child. SPEEDING ! This is always the reason for these accidents.
In my humble opinion if speeding is a problem then making it difficult for drivers to be able to travel speedily especially on certain sections of our roads/highways should be addressed. Increasing fines etc. and all the blah blah blah that tags along is useless. Treat the drivers as you would an errant child.
Make the roads difficult to speed on. Install PROPER speed bumps at EVERY existing pedestrian crossings – in front of ALL schools, churches, hospitals, markets etc. and at ALL busy intersections/ junctions. Our drivers have no regard for pedestrian crossings. As you cross on these the drivers honk their horns at you. Properly constructed speed bumps will make them slow down.
Have our road engineers get the “know how “ from their Surinamese counterparts and implement the format here. These rough patches can even be interspersed on long stretches of straight roads. I again reiterate stop blabbering about speeding vehicles – make the roads difficult to speed on! One other observation: There are many intersections where a driver has to actually go in the middle of the street to check for traffic on the left or right. Two such examples are Robb and Alexander Streets and Church and Alexander Streets to highlight a few. Solution – install obstacles to prevent parking which impedes vision. We can easily access boulders and imbed them where necessary. Painting signs on the road does not work!! See what happens outside the Ministry of Finance where there is a NO PARKING sign painted on the road – and take note of whose vehicles park there. Yes Sir! GOVERNMENT vehicles. It boggles the humble mind. After 50 Years?
