Dear Editor,
I write seeking your attention on a matter that, in my humble belief, if addressed properly, can result in a direct positive impact on a community in Berbice and give new found hope to our youths.
Sir, the Port Mourant Turf Club has been with us for years but at present it is being grossly mismanaged and as a result not fulfilling the purpose of its mandate and creation.
At present eighty percent of the trustees have passed away including Marcel Crawford, his wife Lilian Crawford, Gregory Vanderstoop and Mr. Pompey.
The mismanagement is now being run by two PPP supporters who are the only trustees remaining. These two gentlemen seem to have only their own personal issues to deal with and not that of the Club.
There is currently a letter in the system from Mr. Crawford recommending new trustees to be put on the board. To this day nothing has been done.
I wonder who really is in charge of Port Mourant Turf Club. If I recollect it was said that the British had left that for the People of the Community under Guysuco‘s Supervision.
Until recently Guysuco was providing free electricity and water to the facility. This new Government has declared that much more emphasis would be put on sports. Why can’t the Ministry of Education Department of Culture, Youth and Sport get on board with the Management of Guysuco to establish a new management committee at the club.
There is an infield at the track where other sports can be played including cricket and football. The staging more sporting activity will have a direct and positive effect on the young people in and around that community.
Sir the benefits are endless, animals are grazing there currently while our children can be using it. Is our focus animals or children?
Yours sincerely,
Concerned Horse Owner
