During his presentation on the 2016 Budget Debate, at the Parliament Building, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, revealed that there will be a chain of advances to better the lives of commuters.

Patterson continued that a number of projects have been identified for implementation by the Ministry and that these projects are being funded by the Government of Guyana and the UK-Caribbean Infrastructure Fund (DFID) and will focus on stellings and wharf development, waterfront development, port development and airstrips and aerodromes development.
These projects will attract an estimated cost of G$15.2B.
Upgrade and rehabilitation will be carried out on the Parika Stelling in Region Three, which will see the facility transformed into a waterfront development. This is estimated to cost $472.5M.
Patterson also pointed out that similar upgrades will be carried out on the Port Kaituma Stelling in Region One which is pegged at $1.102B. The Kumaka facility, in the same Region, will also see works being done to the estimated sum of $157.5M.
The Bartica Stelling in Region Seven is also scheduled for development which will attract the cost of $315M.
The Minister continued that $1.1B will also be used to upgrade the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) Stelling in Georgetown and the Stabroek Market Wharf.
“We will be building concessionary stands and floating ramps to accommodate speedboats. And to top it all off, we will be making a walkway linking the Stabroek Market and the Transport and Harbours Wharf.”

Patterson informed the House, that the Ministry will be doing sea defence works and land reclamation from Kingston to Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara where a boardwalk will be constructed to link the two areas. This will be executed at a cost of $3.6B.
“In Region Six, we will be constructing a similar boardwalk, concession stands, powered by solar lighting and a recreation area in Skeldon…Construction of a boardwalk, concession stands and recreational space for the speedboat operators and the travelling public in Supenaam in Region Two.”
Some $2.520 billion dollars has been allocated to the Airstrips and Aerodromes development project.
This project which will see the rehabilitation and upgrades for the Mahdia, Ekereku, Lethem and the Bartica Airstrips.
Patterson stated that the Ministry of Public Infrastructure has already published advertisements inviting technical proposals including conceptual designs and financial proposals from suitably qualified individuals and consulting firms.
These advertisements he stated, have already attracted interest as far as Europe as bids are expected in by the end of February 2016.
“All of these developments will create employment and major economic input into these Regions. It is our Government’s commitment that the residents and current users will be given first option to jobs and concessions”.
