The Solid Waste Management Unit of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown and Puran’s Brothers Waste Disposal Service have joined forces to remove the piles of garbage that lined the access road to the
Haags Bosch Landfill Site for a number of years.
Puran’s Brothers was just a week ago temporarily contracted to managed the Haags Bosch Landfill Site after the contract was reportedly taken back from BK International because of unsatisfactory work at the site for some time now.
This publication understands that City Hall is in the process of setting up terms and references for a new contractor with a hope that provisions will be made to not only manage the landfill site but also the access road, and setting up guard huts at strategic locations to prevent instances of illegal dumping.
Meanwhile, it is likely that a temporary holding site will be opened to accommodate garbage that may be taken in after closing hours which is at 17:00 hours daily and 13:00 hours at weekends.
Operations at the Haags Bosch Landfill Site are also “coming around” as Puran Brothers has managed to source a bulldozer to assist with the “packing” of the temporary holding cell. When operations began, the access road to the holding cell was blocked by garbage.
It is hoped that with new management, the landfill site will meet the requirements of the loan agency, the Inter- American Development Bank.
BK International signed the agreement for the landfill project in November 2009 and operations commenced during February of 2011.
The landfill was designed to take in the waste of the entire Region Four, from Soesdyke to Mahaica, and to ensure that no foul odour emanates. It was also intended to make provisions for the trapping of fire-causing methane gas.
