Thirty one Peace Corps volunteers from the United States of America are now in Guyana and they are expected to tackle the areas of health and education after completing a two- month training programme here.
These volunteers will serve the country for the next two years. They will be placed in Regions Two, Three, Six and Ten. Of the batch, 14 will be placed in the health sector and 17 will work in the Education sector.
Kaieteur News was told that the volunteers who are in the health field will focus on Child, Mental and Adolescence Health; Maternal and Neonatal Care among other health areas.
They are currently being trained in technical and cross-cultural concepts, local language and maintaining personal health, safety and security.
The training was designed to provide the volunteers with the necessary practical skills to meet the needs of the communities that they will serve.
Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, on Thursday welcomed the group. “We are looking forward to have you working here. I know the Peace Corps has developed a reputation in the Ministry of Public Health system with their development of school health clubs which focus on HIV/AIDs, adolescent health and teenage pregnancy.”
The Minister told the gathering that teenage pregnancy is a major problem in the country and any help will be appreciated to get this issue under control.
“The whole idea of you going out there to work in those particular areas for instance in the maternal, infant and child health, you will be helping individuals to adapt to practices that will lead to healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries,” Dr. Norton noted.
“There is a place for instance in Region Nine where we have a hospital, we have a doctor who is on duty, we have a birthing room and pre and post natal clinics but the villagers are still not too convinced they should go and have their deliveries there. They still have home deliveries.”
He told the volunteers to urge persons to come out and visit the clinics.
The Peace Corps is a volunteer programme run by the United States government. The work is generally related to social and economic development. Each program participant is an American citizen, typically with a college degree.
