A Guyana Defence Force Sergeant from the army’s Intelligence Unit is in a critical condition after he was struck by a minibus on Church Street around 09.30 hrs yesterday.
Sergeant Selwyn Woodroffe, 36, of Crane, West Coast Demerara, was reportedly crossing Church Street, in the vicinity of Guyana Stores, when the vehicle, driven by Leon Kyte, struck him.
He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the driver has been detained. Kaieteur News understands that Woodroffe was still unconscious up to late yesterday evening.
His wife told Kaieteur News that Sergeant Woodroffe was on duty at the time the accident occurred.
Army sources also said that Sergeant Woodroffe was seconded to the Intelligence Unit’s Military Criminal Investigation Department and was on active duty at the time.
The bus driver’s wife visited the injured Sergeant and also spoke briefly to his spouse.
It was just last December that another army Intelligence rank, Sergeant Robert Pyle, his wife, Stacy, and truck driver Linden Eastman were killed during a head-on collision with Pyle’s Toyota Premio and the truck that Eastman was driving.
The tragedy occurred on the night of December 30, 2015 on Carifesta Avenue.
According to reports, Pyle, who was seconded to the Special Organized Crime Unit, (SOCU), was pursuing another vehicle when he lost control and collided with the Canter.
The Guyana Defence Force subsequently confirmed that Sergeant Pyle was deployed on a legitimate operation in support of SOCU when he crashed.
