Rajesh Seegobin, of 19 Public Road, Prospect, East Bank Demerara walked out of court a free man yesterday, after he was found not guilty of falsely declaring Great Britain Pounds (GBP) at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, last year.
Police had alleged that on March 17, 2015, at CJIA, he had £32,300, in his possession, but only declared £30,300 to an immigration officer.
At the conclusion of the trial yesterday, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan informed the court that she had found Seegobin not guilty of the offence charged. Magistrate McLennan said that the man was honest with the court and she believed his story.
She added that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Four witnesses were called to testify on behalf of the prosecution.
Seegobin, who was represented by Attorney Glenn Hanoman had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $100,000 bail.
The lawyer had contended that his client had no reason to make a false declaration, since he declared £30,300 at the airport. Hanoman had told the court £2,000 belonged to his client’s wife.
When the matter concluded yesterday, the court ordered that the £2,000 be returned to Seegobin. According to reports, the defendant was taking his money overseas to purchase tyres for his business.
