It was a good day for racing with the track in excellent condition and Princess She Not owned by the Shariff stable continued to show that it is one of the top racehorses in Guyana, especially among the sprinters.
Imported from The USA, the animal classified D3 with a weight of 123 pounds and ridden by Jockey Colin Ross on Sunday won the feature 5furlong event which was open to all animals imported and locally bred to continue the winning ways of the Shariff stable.
The win was a stunning one, as tongues continue to wag that the “late Mohamed ‘Nankoo’ Shariff blow good breeze on the stable”. Since his passing the stable has been performing exceptionally well.
At Sunday’s Port Mourant Turf Club Horserace meet, the stable won four races from four starts. It was no easy going for Princess She’s Not in the feature event. Strom Bird classified G1 of the Bacchus stable carrying a light weight of 108 pounds and ridden by Trinidadian Jockey Kizan Razack, took the lead. Known for its sprinting ability the animal was out of the gate in a flash and immediately established a sizable lead. Princess She Not took some time to gather momentum, but like a true princess, before long was travelling at full throttle. By that time Strom Bird was really galloping as it hit the homestretch all alone. By then the wily Ross on the perch was using all his experience to take Princess She is Not forward.
It was coming down to the wire with Storm Bird storming towards the finish pole and Princess She Not flying at full tilt, guided by Ross running on the fence. The horse was able to gather enough momentum to charge ahead just in time in one of the better finishes.
With the win the stable became $700,000 richer and collected the beautiful Banks D Trophy as Storm Mark finished a distant third.
The Shariff stable was thoroughly large and in charge at the famous PMTC big yard.
The much improved Campador of The Shariff stable with Ross in control continues to show speed as it raced away from the rest of the field for an easy win in the G and lower 6.5 furlongs race. The win was worth $300,000 and trophy as Birdman, Chelsea and Bridal Stone Corner were the others that placed.
The winning ways of the Shariff stable continued in the H and lower event as Lova Lova piloted by Ross showed no love and mercy for its opponents, winning the 6 furlongs race and the $250,000 and trophy ahead of Cat Messiah, Mod Night Blues and Amazing Run.
An excellent run down the home stretch was all it took for Miss Kristina to make it four wins in as many starts for the Shariff stable as it won the event for three year maiden Guyana Bred horses. It took home the $220,000 and trophy from Golden Kiss and She in Control.
Party Time of the De Mattos stable with Paul Delph riding had things its way in winning the J and lower gallop to take away the $160,000 and first prize with Liquid Lion and Little being made small.
Massapequa Dr ridden by Ajai of the Crawford stable won the 6 furlongs event for horses classified K and lower and the $140,000 and trophy from Sunday Silence, and Noble Import.
Another Strom of the Amernauth stable of Mahaicony with Paul Delph riding was in winner’s row in the L and lower 6 furlongs event to collect $120,000 and trophy.
Jockey Colin Ross was the champion jockey with his four wins with Paul Delph the runner up. The Shariff Stable once again was easily adjudged the champion stable.
The day’s event was well organised and was by and large incident free with the police led by Assistant Superintendent Marlon Taylor and Sergeant Welch coming in for special commendation for doing an excellent job. (Samuel Whyte)
