A close relative of murdered businessman Mohamed F. Khan plans to institute legal proceedings to have a police Inspector replaced as the Prosecutor in the conspiracy trial against his colleague Sergeant Leon Lindo.
Bibi Fareema Khan, a sister of the dead businessman, has expressed concern that justice may not be served with Police Prosecutor, Inspector Vishnu Hunt, presiding over the matter that will pit murder accused Lennox Wayne against Lindo.
Khan, who resides in the United States of America, told this newspaper via telephone that she is basing her concerns on news reports that the Preliminary Inquiry into the matter is being prosecuted by Hunt.
“In the interest of justice, they should appoint a Special Prosecutor. For all we know Lindo might be a friend of the Prosecutor, since they might have served together in the force at some time,” Khan told this newspaper
“Friends helping friends…I’m not too comfortable with that; this is a serious matter,” the woman added.
Wayne, called ‘Two Colours’, is expected to be the prosecution’s main witness in the matter and is scheduled to give his testimony before Magistrate Judy Latchman on March 7.
Police Sergeant Lindo is accused of conspiring with Wayne to murder Khan, a businessman between July 10 and July 18, 2014 at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
Khan’s dismembered body was subsequently discovered on a dam at Cummings Lodge on September 23, 2014. His skull, which was wrapped in a plastic bag, was located several feet from the body.
No one has actually been charged for the murder and the dead businessman’s relatives have questioned this state of affairs.
However, while the Director of Public Prosecution is of the view that Wayne has provided evidence of a plot to kill Khan, he did not give any evidence linking anyone to the actual murder.
Khan, 54, had escaped execution in July 2014 at La Grange, West Bank Demerara, when a gunman shot him in his abdomen shortly after he returned to Guyana on a brief holiday.
Wayne had admitted to being that gunman.
After that initial attempt on his life, Khan fled to neighbouring Venezuela after selling his business on Hadfield Street. He later spoke of threats to his life.
The charge against Police Sergeant Lindo of Lot 220 Belle West, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara stemmed from revelations made by whistleblower Wayne, who is at present in prison awaiting High Court trial for the 2014 murder of Lusignan Cosmetologist, Ashmini Harriram.
The dead businessman’s relatives were not too pleased
Wayne and Lindo were both present in court on Monday when the matter was called. However the matter was put down for March 7 due to the absence of Lindo’s lawyer, Glenn Hanoman.
Magistrate Latchman repetitively told the police that she will proceed with the matter on the adjourned date with or without Lindo’s Attorney.
