Dear Editor,
Guyanese will be better off with used tyres. The new tyre price will be far too high. If the new tyre price was reasonable, it would be okay for the poor man. We have to look at the poor man first. The rich will always better off because they can afford anything. If the new tyre price is reasonable people will have a choice,
The used tyre from North America and Europe might be better because when the new ones come to Guyana, they will be of the low quality type. Businessmen will compete and bring the sun-standard tyres. A poor man will buy four tyres for his vehicle rather than park his vehicle, but then he will work that tyre to the bottom, so at the end of the day we will have vehicle with bad tyres.
When a poor man put four new tyres, the next thing he will have to do is to build a strong garage. Next thing you know tyre stealing will be rampant. People will be afraid to park their cars. If am going to spend a hundred thousand on tyres then I have to really protect my car.
In America and Canada there are vehicle more than ten years old. We are a Third World country; why we must only bring in eight year old vehicle? People really think that the year of the car really matters. If one brings a 2005 vehicle with 50 000 miles usage and one brings a 2009 vehicle with 50 000 mile usage; both vehicle have the same engine. What is the big deal of the year? The poor will not able to own a vehicle. I think used tyre is okay and vehicle that is 12 year old is okay for our econmy. I do hope the relevant authorities see with the poor. Zakir Ally
