Dear Editor,
This letter was penned to gain the attention of those who are responsible for the payment of the retired employees, who were employed with the Mayor and Town Council Linden. It has been three years and over,e the employees who have retired have not been paid a cent of our gratuity and arrears pension up to the time of writing this letter.Monthly pensions are not being paid on the schedule date of the month, not until the following month with varying dates, e.g, 15th, or even the 10th for the previous month. In that way we are always being robbed of a month’s salary.
What aroused our anger more which led to the publication of this letter, to our surprise, the Council has made a decision to pay ten (10) Councillors Seventy Thousand Dollars (G70,0130) each for long service. The service that we, the retired employees gave was so much more longer with years of tiring in sun and rain and long hours of overtime without pay. Some of us served twenty, twenty-five, and thirty years and not even a simple letter of thank you; and even what is due to us was not given.
On checking we found out that our NIS contributions are not up to date. No payments were made for a number of years. Some persons who have worked for ten years, no contributions were posted to NIS for them.
We are concerned about what will happen to us when we attain the age of 60 years when we are eligible to receive NIS pension. We had already been robbed. Will we be robbed again due to the negligence of the council. We were denied increases while other government workers enjoyed their fruits of their labour. We were always told by the Council that they do not have the ‘ability to pay’. We feel that this is utterly unfair to us.
All that we are asking, that the Council pay us what is due to us and pay up all our outstanding arrears to NIS. We need someone to answer us. Where is the concern and love for us who have given our youth ,talent, skill and health as we laboured in the sun and rain for the council and now we are left like neglected children. We are pleading for someone to see this complaint and give us a hearing.
