Lindore’s 7-59 spurs GDF to 9-wicket win
By Sean Devers
First-Class player Gajanand Singh followed up his classy 95 on Saturday with 5-39 to spearhead GNIC to an emphatic 10-wicket win against the University-of-Guyana (UG) in the GCA’s Star Party Rentals, Trophy Stall & GISC ended at the Malteenoes Ground yesterday.
Singh, the unlikely hero in the Unity Cricket two Saturday’s ago when he upstaged a galaxy of stars at Providence to take 4-25, grabbed a five-wicket haul to help skittle out UG for 89-9 with Denver Greaves did not show up to bat.
Set eight runs to win, the GNIC openers reached 10 without loss in 2.2 overs as the Students were given a sound trashing on another day blessed with glorious sunshine despite 4-66 from Skipper Damion Vantull and a fighting 41 from Leon Williams.
Scores: UG (167 & 89-9), GNIC (249 & 10-0).
GNIC resumed the final day on 200-5 and Jermaine Grosvenor took his overnight 16 to 28 while Lloyd George (16) was the only other batsman to reach double figures as GNIC lost their last five wickets yesterday for 49 runs 20 minutes before Lunch.
Fast bowler Ray Newton who removed the GNIC top order on Saturday supported Vantull with 3-27 for UG whose second innings batting performance lacked discipline and fight after Williams and Melroy Stephenson (10) put together 32 for the first wicket before they were both removed by Singh’s off-breaks.
Meanwhile, at GDF the soldiers won by 10 wickets.
Scores: GDF (350-5 dec & 24-1) Police (171 & 202).
They began with Police on 80-1 with Sherwin McPherson on 62 in reply to a huge first innings total set by the Army.
McPherson added just two runs yesterday while Kevin Grumble chipped in with 26. Jeremiah Harris (3-10) Orlando Tanner (2-17) and Ishwar Singh (2-21) did the damage for GDF.
Asked to follow-on the Cops feared a little better the second time around with Kelvin Leitch stroking an even 100 and Stephen Harris supporting with 23 not out. Off-Spinner Randy Lindore captured a career best 7-59 and got support from Kevin Ramdeen who bagged 2-42. GDF reached 24-1 to win by nine wickets.
