The wife of a Chinese Restaurant owner was shot dead at around 20.00 hrs last night at Number 57 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The woman, who was not identified, was shot in the face, reportedly after gunmen sneaked into the restaurant and attacked the family.
Nothing appears to have been stolen, and a woman who was one of the first persons at the scene said she did not hear any gunshots.
Reports indicate that the restaurant was closed to customers at the time, but that the family was having dinner in the establishment.
The incident occurred just four houses away from the residence of Special Assistant to Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Mr. Gobin Harbhajan. Mr. Harbhajan and members of a B Division Community Policing Group (CPG) were holding a meeting at the time.
Radica Ramanandan, Liaison Officer within the Ministry of Public Security, told Kaieteur News that she was standing outside Mr. Harbhagan’s house at around 20.00 hrs when she heard someone screaming. The sound was coming from the direction of the restaurant.
She immediately alerted her colleagues, and they hurried over to the restaurant by vehicle. She observed that the restaurant gate was padlocked and the owner of the restaurant was screaming.
“He was screaming ‘bandits…bandits shoot my wife,’” Mrs. Ramanandan recalled.
On entering the yard, they saw the proprietor’s wife lying on the ground outside the restaurant entrance. She appeared to have been shot in the vicinity of the nose. Mrs. Ramanandan said that the woman was still alive, but succumbed at the Skeldon Hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that the husband has said that the family, including two sons, was having dinner, when at least two men entered the restaurant via a back door and attacked them. His wife was reportedly shot while trying to escape.
The county of Berbice has experienced some brutal murders in recent months.
In January, Anita Baichan, 49, was tied up in her Plantation Hope, West Coast Berbice home by bandits who then set the property alight with her inside. A few days later, bandits hacked Doodnauth Rajkumar, 81, and his wife, Dianne Chammanlall, to death in their home at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
Rooplall Abrahim, 24, Gocoul Madanpaul, 18, and Nazamadeen Raffick, 19, were subsequently charged in connection with the three murders.
