A nightly halftime entertainment show will be a fixed feature throughout the upcoming National Basketball Championships: The Road to Mecca III, which will be held for a third straight year at the mecca of local basketball, The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
In an effort to continue the momentum that was generated over the last two years in the sport, the organising committee of what is being dubbed ‘Mega Mecca III’ is planning to engage patrons in new ways that will set new standards for the sport in Guyana.
The aim is to raise the bar and attempt to eliminate all boredom and nonchalance derived from a generally low-keyed atmosphere; the planned halftime entertainment programmes are engineered to encourage fans and families to support their respective teams and players.
Without giving too much away before the championships is officially launched in two weeks, the organisers said that halftime will feature performances from popular local artistes in addition to a range of spectator-friendly games for sponsors’ giveaways.
Supporters of the event that is scheduled to start early March will have a chance to win sponsors’ memorabilia and even cash once they are selected to participate in the games; one of the novelty games will be patrons shooting for cash and collectables from various points on the court, which increases with degree of difficulty.
Meaning, the free-throw shot prize will be less than the three-point shot prize, and the three-point shot prize less than the half-court shot prize. One of Guyana’s foremost comics will be Master of Ceremonies (MC) throughout the Championships.
It was necessary to introduce arts and culture into the sport for more than one reason this year the organisers believe, given that Guyana will be celebrating 50 years of Independence in May. They felt it was important to celebrate that throughout the Championships.
In fact, the full tag line for the Championships is The Road to Mecca III: The Jubilee Edition. It will be launched in a trendy environment with teams, officials, sponsors and the public invited to participate in what will become a Launch Party.
It is hoped that from the launch, the environment is set for a riveting Championships that will be historic in more ways than one. Already the buzz among teams is which among them will have a distinguished honour of winning the title in Guyana’s Jubilee year.
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has named and seeded the 16 teams, which will compete over three weekends for the ultimate prize. The teams drawn are from Georgetown, Linden and Berbice, the three active GABF sub-associations.
