Dear Editor,
In a KN letter of Feb. 2, Tony Vieira, a former Manager of Versailles and Schoonord Sugar Estates stated that his family had sold the Versailles sugar factory to Bookers in 1956. It was later nationalized by the then PNC Govt. in 1976. He made no mention in his letter what became of the Versailles and Schoonord sugar lands but claimed that in 1978 his father, then Chairman of Versailles factory and himself were called to GuySuCo’s office in Georgetown and told that the Versailles factory would be closed at the end of that year crop. The conglomerate of sugar estates with their assets which were nationalized became GuySuCo with Harold Davis as Chairman. Therefore, it is inconceivable that Tony Vieira’s father could have been chairman of Versailles factory at that time although it may well have been that Tony was the Manager as no Corporation has two Chairmen simultaneously.
In his missives Tony Vieira has given readers the impression that as a Director he speaks for the Board of GuySuCo which evidently makes group decisions subject to the approval of its owner – APNU+AFC Govt., unless of course he had been authorized by the Chairman of the Board to make preliminary policy decisions public although they are still under consideration. It appears however that he had broken protocol by giving assurances in a Stabroek News letter of Jan. 27 that no worker from the Wales estate will be displaced.
In another KN letter of Feb. 3, he claimed that he never proposed diversification for Wales estate. However, in a Stabroek News letter of Jan. 27 para 2, he stated,”I saw an opportunity for using a part of the sugar cane lands at Wales through a diversification process to bring wealth to my country”. These and other contradictions have made Guyanese apprehensive of claims that he has unquestionable knowledge of the industry.
Finally, I would like to give him credit for his observation during a recent visit to my lodging that as a space conscious New Yorker I live in a one bedroom apartment with a large living room with a divan for overnight guests should the need arise as I lack the means to own luxury apartments/condos in Florida and Upstate New York. Can I ask Vieira if he owns real estate or apartments in the US? Also, I do have regular check-ups but so far my doctors have not detected the onset of senility as he claimed I have although I do have some of the other ills seniors have to endure. I wish him well and trust he gets a good attorney to vet the veracity of my letter before making a false filing for legal action.
