Dear Editor,
With the recent reading of the 2016 Budget, Bharrat Jagdeo has risen to take a stand for the poor. It is a cruel twist of fate for Guyana that he continues to grace the halls of Parliament, much less appear to champion the cause of the poor.
The current administration has committed to examining the criminal atrocities under his administration, so it is just a matter of time before the former Minister of Health along with one of his Ministers previously responsible for Home Affairs and others stand to give evidence for the administration of justice for the victims and those aggrieved.
The misuse of NICIL by Jagdeo’s administration to acquire property for himself and his political cronies at well below their market value, along with the abuse of other state resources, should be found to be criminal at the very least, or else gross misappropriation and mismanagement of the state’s resources. No attempt should be made to secure appropriate compensation for these resources.
The transactions which facilitated the transfer of state lands for Jagdeo’s mansion should be voided and reversed to facilitate the return of these resources to the state. The same holds for the other beneficiaries. Efforts should also be made to hold those responsible for the misuse of taxes to lay civil infrastructure on these lands prior to their transfer.
Jagdeo’s appeals on behalf of the poor are farcical in light of the fact that his administration systematically marginalized and underdeveloped sections of the Guyanese nation.
While the recent investments by ExxonMobil stand as a testament to its own research and confidence in the future of Guyana’s politics and the current administration, from the global perspective, the current representatives of the Opposition stand as a high political risk to foreign investors, since few international businesses which make it a principle of avoid corrupt countries would consider the Opposition an attractive alternative administration under which they could consider operating in the long term.
This is something that needs to be considered and addressed if Guyana seriously intends to accelerate its transformation to make up for the lost years under Jagdeo’s administration.
