There is the saying, “Out with the old and in with the new”! This is so for the Sparendaam
Magistrate’s Court, which is set to be demolished to facilitate the construction of a new and improved courthouse.
The Better Hope Community Centre will be the new temporary location where sittings will be held until construction is completed. Better Hope is situated just east of Sparendaam and Plaisance East Coast Demerara.
Chancellor of the Judiciary (Ag), Justice Carl Singh, declared that the community facility will become a courthouse and sittings will commence there from Monday. The order was contained in a signed Supreme Court notice.
The new courthouse will accommodate two courtrooms and will be enhanced to block out the sound of heavy traffic along the Rupert Craig Highway, which normally disturbs the proceedings, this is according to a judicial source.
However no indication was given as to how soon the building of the new courthouse would commence or when it would be completed.
