Dear Editor,
Today, I write to forewarn, and appeal to, the President and Prime Minister, the two party leaders in the coalition. It is hoped that both, but especially His Excellency, will not allow what follows to be greeted by the nonchalance of disinterest, or to let fall on stony territory. First, the gulf between rhetoric and reality yawns; like a typical yawn it has an expansive recognizable arc. Similarly, the distance between promises and practices grows. This is injurious to all, be it people, country, or party.
Second, there is something that is said repeatedly, and from multiple disparate quarters. It is that the character, standards, and tawdry record of predecessor leaders and governments must not be imitated in the least. That sorry accumulation of the sordid and self-serving from earlier times must be shunned and abhorred through differentiating actions on the part of the incumbents. I agree again. The pathos of the past must (one more time) remain in the past.
Third, it is understood that, as part of political pragmatism and tradition, loyalists have to be accommodated. My recommendation is to house them where are neither a danger nor embarrassment to themselves (through their self-seeking priorities) or any true constructive vision for this society. Take care of them, but take great care that men and women of enlightenment and unswerving idealism are where things count, and where they can make signature contributions that herald the perspicacity of the decision-makers.
Fourth, and in the same vein, the apparatus of lofty sounding governance, supplemented by venal magistracies, is still rickety. There is dire need for the introduction of new components and new faces. To a significant degree, the latter, as recently introduced, appears to be weak, tired, and the same old worn wineskins. Truth be told, this is a pitiable mediocrity. There is consternation and disbelief; and even if some could have partially delivered, they are too torn by personal priorities, usually not aligned with the welfare of society. The sharp distinctive truncation of interests between governors and governed intensifies.
Fifth, some second rate mentalities have already progressed beyond the resulting aftermath of May 2015. They toil assiduously to perfect 20/20 vision for 2020, and to position themselves accordingly. The lines are being calculated and drawn from now. Thus, it behooves the administration to be sharply conscious as it constructs various bodies and boards and, in the process, welcomes Trojans. There are those who anticipate a return to paradise. They are in the bosom. I warn that the objectives of too many held close stand in stark contradiction to the interests of the peoples of this society. Sixth, there should be serious concern that so many supportive voters are disappointed with some the choices and directions taken by the coalition. The disappointed have gone so far as to express publicly their disenchantment. Perhaps, expectations were set too high, and a much desired idealism in government is unrealistic, given the dark haunts of domestic politics. I stand on the edge of the disappointed.
Seventh, there exists prospering on-the-ground partition in the spheres of politics, race, bureaucracy, spirituality, and mutual negativity. Those who are honest enough must admit that this country is partitioned in everything, save for the label itself, the official declaration. The challenge is to overcome through stirring visions and careful deeds; to persevere. This resides squarely and unambiguously in the realm of leader(s). Having done my duty, the president and prime minister are now not in a position to plead ignorance on any of the seven points identified. They know what they have to do, what is expected of them.
