– likely to prevent Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya spread
Although only one confirmed case of the mosquito-borne Zika virus has been reported in Guyana, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added the country to its travel advisory, asking pregnant women to avoid visiting.
In an effort to prevent the virus from spreading, a local pesticide expert has recommended the ‘In2Care Trap’ which is a control tool for mosquitoes that transmit the Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya and Yellow fever disease.
The In2Care Mosquito trap is touted as a unique mosquito control product that attracts the Aedes mosquitoes ready to lay eggs and uses insecticide to kill them.
It contaminates mosquitoes with larvicide powder (insecticide) and uses them to spread this killing agent to surrounding breeding sites.
The trap is made of durable and recycles polyethylene and contains a floater that moves along with the water level and serves as the resting site for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes carrying eggs are attracted to the trap by the odours.
The ‘In2Care Trap’ was developed by the Dutch research company In2Care.
According to the official, Zika, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya are nasty viral diseases to which no drugs or vaccines are available.
These diseases are quickly spreading to several countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America.
The pest control expert said that the In2Care Trap takes advantage of the mosquito life cycle and breeding habits.
Aedes mosquitoes prefer dark, container-like breeding sites and typically lay eggs in not just one, but in multiple sites. The trap is based on the latest scientific knowledge and uses an organic odour to lure mosquitoes.
It is unclear why the government has turned a blind eye on the offer made by the local Pest Company to use the In2Care trap to the mosquito population despite the fact that it is being used by other countries. The company currently has 700,000 In2Care trap in stock.
Contacted yesterday, the Health Minister, Dr. George Norton said that he has no knowledge about this but will do everything he can to prevent the viruses from spreading.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) had listed Guyana as one of the countries within the Americas as having a Zika Virus pandemic but the minister said there is no such pandemic.
The first case of Zika was detected January 12, 2016 at a private hospital. The infected woman is still being monitored along with other persons who may have come into contact with her. Other suspected cases were also being monitored and samples of their blood were taken and sent to the Caribbean Pubic Health Agency in Trinidad and Tobago for testing.
Kaieteur News was told that none of the results from the nine samples sent tested positive for Zika.
