Residents of Kwakwani, Region Ten have not been taking their road concerns lightly. They have thus
collaborated with private businesses to put in place remedial measures.
This development was highlighted by Charles Thom, a resident of the Kwakwani community situated in the Berbice River. Thom is a logger by profession.
He told this publication that it was following a meeting hosted by Regional Vice Chairman, Elroy Adolph, with some residents of the community that a decision was taken for the residents to work together to fix the community roads that were in a deplorable condition for nearly one year.
The roads, according to Thom, were damaged by traversing logging trucks. The damage was advanced by incessant rainfalls. The affected roads cater to about 4,000 people living in the Kwakwani community, Thom said.
Having decided to do whatever was necessary to repair the roads, Thom said that he along with other residents, solicited the support of the private sector. Among those who have rendered support to the venture the resident said, was Rong An Inc., a Chinese logging company which provided a grader and a truck; another Chinese businessman, Mr. Lin, offered the residents the use of a front end loader and other equipment while another local businessman, Mr. Orville August, contributed yet another front end loader towards the works.
Residents contributed fuel for the equipment and raised funds to pay the local operators that were made available by the companies. Some Chinese operators have also offered their services to road work efforts.
The Rong An Inc. Company had long been involved in helping to restore damaged roads in Kwakwani. In fact the Company had long adopted the 100-kilometre Unamco Road and has been maintaining this road so that it is accessible to loggers of Region Ten.
The repairs to the internal roads of Kwakwani, which commenced on Thursday, are expected to see at least four miles of road being remedied with bauxite capping.
Member of Parliament with responsibility for Sub-Region Two of Region Ten, which covers Kwakwani, Ituni and the Berbice River areas, Mr. Odwin Rutherford and Mr. Adolph, were instrumental in garnering the bauxite capping from the RUSAL Bauxite Company, according to Thom.
