Hardcore tourism appeals to tourists seeking adventure and Guyana is just the place to experience it. Guyana’s layout of rolling savannahs and highlands offers new tourism opportunities.
Donald Sinclair, Director General of the Ministry of Tourism in an interview with the Government Information Agency indicated that this potential will be maximised.
According to Sinclair, “Guyana has great potential for the visitor who wants hard adventure. Biking is one area. Hiking is another, because a lot of our terrain is rugged. We have mountainous terrains. We have hills and, for example, if we take the one resort, Arrowpoint Resort, there is a nature trail there which has a good scope for biking, mountain biking and so on.”
The terrain of the Rupununi also offers exciting opportunities for that kind of tourism, Sinclair pointed out. This area is made up of savannahs and rainforests and is located in the Southern part of Guyana. He further stated that the ‘Visit Rupununi Organisation’ aims to develop attractions in the area by developing the communities. This will strengthen the participation of the residents in growing and marketing the Rupununi.
The Visit Rupununi Organisation which was launched in 2015 comprises several stakeholders including government, private sector, and representatives of 35 communities of the Rupununi.
Guyana’s rich flora and fauna, and rich indigenous culture are also pull factors for eco-tourism as Sinclair pointed out. These, he said, relate to landscapes, birds, fish, Amerindian culture, foods and a whole range of exciting opportunities.
Hardcore tourism is discovering areas through the most intense, rewarding and strenuous way possible. Community-based tourism and eco-tourism will be also examined and promoted.
Eco-tourism involves travelling to relatively undisturbed natural areas with the objective of admiring, studying, and enjoying the scenery and its wild plants and animals, as well as any cultural features found in Guyana’s hinterland.
