On Friday, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded Dennis Jones after he allegedly robbed a Third Form student of his cell phone and $13,000 cash.
Twenty-year -old Jones denied the allegation which stated that on December 24, last, at Cornhill Street, Georgetown being armed with a dangerous weapon and in the company of another, robbed Neil Higgins of one cellular phone and $13,000 in cash.
The Magistrate denied his Attorney’s application for bail and remanded him on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence. However, he has to make another court appearance set for February 9, before City Magistrate Delon Bess.
Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal Deniro Jones, objected to bail being granted. He told the court that the complainant is a Third Form Student. On the day in question the accused and another person approached the young man who was heading home from school.
The two men were armed with ice picks and relieved the teen of his phone and the cash. The men then made good their escape. Weeks later, the teen recognized the accused on the Route 44 Bus Park and alerted a nearby police officer. Jones was subsequently arrested and charged.
Attorney-at-Law, Lyndon Amsterdam who is representing the defendant, applied for his client to be granted bail. The Attorney told the court that the prosecution facts were very ‘shady’. Amsterdam related that police at the time did not get the main suspect in the incident and charged whoever they could find.
The Prosecutor said that in this society, school children are not safe going home.
