Public Servants will have to wait a little while longer for any salary increase. The $230B budget for 2016 did not provide any goodies in this regard.
During his budget presentation before the National Assembly yesterday, Finance Minister Winston Jordan said that an announcement on salary increases for public servants, for 2016, has to await the conclusion of discussions with the relevant unions.
He said that the government understands the disappointment this will create among public servants, but wishes to assure them of its commitment to their welfare and advancement.
“We ask that they give the collective bargaining process an opportunity to work,” Jordan expressed.
He recalled that following Government’s accession to office, in May 2015, it immediately set about to improve wages of public servants. As a result, the minimum wage was raised to $50,000, an increase of between 17.1 percent and 26.4 percent, depending on whether the employee was receiving $39,540 or $42,703.
He noted that other employees received five percent on the salaries as at December 2014 plus an additional $5,000 per month.
Further, the Finance Minister said that in December 2015, all public servants earning less than $500,000 were paid a one-off, tax-free bonus of $50,000, a departure from the discriminatory practice employed by the previous Administration of only paying members of the Disciplined Services.
